30 Coastal Congressman trying to grab Stimulus $$ for Beach Projects

Here's another article @ the title link about how the BIG Corps. & their Congressional patrons are trying to get beach replenishment $$ included in the the Obama stimulus. The article tries to say that BV$H jr. was the bad guy that excluded these funds from his budget and this was not the case before him. The truth is that not only GW BV$H excluded all beach Replenishment $$ from their Budgets. No President since Reagan has included a dime for these Projects in their budgets. All of the $$ put toward these projects have been allocated by Congress without Presidental approval. How does this happen? It's a very long story, but lets just say that earmarks ( pork) like this are added to Omnibus spending bills the President signs daily. It's the way Congress gets around Executive branch budget projections and it's the reason why Federal spending is so bloated. The Presidential line item veto was ruled Un-Constitutional during Clinton's second term. This means that a President cannot pick the pork out of these bills. He's forced to sign them or get nothing passed. The truth is most President's don't care because they can turn around and blame Congress for all the Porky spending. The Congress doesn't care because it allows them to pay off all their Porky contributers. It's called CORRUPTION and it's the DC $$ game writ large. In this case the lobbyist for these companies are trying to end run the whole process of Congressional negotiation and get their projects written directly into the Major part of the Stimulus bill. I hope they FAIL! Don't give these vandals a DIME O!!

FOUR YEARS!

Today marks my fourth year of blogging here. It started out as a way to educate people about what I felt at the time were certain Programs and Projects that were negatively impacting our beaches, locally and Nationally. I think I've managed over these last four yrs. to stay true to that original idea, while @ the same time I've also allowed myself to widen and deepen my approach to blogging. There has been times along the way when I have decided enough was enough and ended it. It seems,  instead I went on to blogging almost daily these last two years. I want to thank all of thousands of people out here from all over the world that have read my blog ( I can identify your Regional locations where your logging on ) and also to my core following that has followed my blog now for many years and responds to my posts. In the future I hope you'll continue to follow me on this literary journey as I wander across the world's beaches and in and out of the political, economic, scientific and social topics of the hour. I look forward to your responses and your e-mails and appreciate the feed back. Blogging is after all an interactive exercise to some degree and hopefully one that will continue to grow in the future. Please keep responding with your comments and if you'd like to be put on my daily mailing list please e-mail me and I'll add you to the list. ( my e-mail address is listed here at the top of my blog.)

OMB REMOVES BEACH PROJECTS FROM STIMULUS FUNDING!

It appears that the Obama Admin. is poised to follow the lead of the last three President's, by removing all Army Corp. beach projects from it's official budgets. This throws the whole issue back onto Congress. It doesn't mean that Congress won't throw more $$ into these Projects however. They will, but the amounts will probably continue to be reduced as Congress fights over every dime. Poor Congressman Lobiondo, he can't just grab whatever he wants for these Projects anymore, because he's no longer the Chairmen of the Committee that dolls out the cashola $$$. It appears even Obama's guys aren't buying the replenished beaches mean jobs shtick the K Street snake oil salesmen ( Marlowe & Co.) pitch Congress. Read more about it at the title link.

SAND JUNKIES

IS YOUR TOWN HOOKED?

@ the title link is a little story about sand from down Fla. way. Seems the folks down there are starting to get desperate for another fix of the white stuff( sand I mean). Replenishing beaches does this to communities. It creates a sand high and then we all know what happens when the high ends don't we? The locals start howling for MORE sand fast.  Or, they start looking for ways to make what they have last longer. ( This gets really expensive and here's where the real cons thrive. )  The coastal towns hooked on sand  don't care whose paying for it either.  I call these communites sand junkies and the dealer is usually your friendly local Army Corp. office.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

Your Tax dollars in Action!

Here's a little tale I call Public Relations at your expense. The Army Corp of Engs. had been getting beaten up for yrs. by the Surfriders Association for destroying great surf breaks whenever they did a beach project. For yrs. they could have cared less but this past yr. I guess they decided with a few more millions of our tax dollars they could try and make a few dozen surfers happy in North jersey. So that's what this story is about. For the Army, nothing has has changed. This is about Public relations and as long as it's "our" money they're spending to improve their rotten arrogant  image , so what! Anyway read the article @ the title link it's pretty weird, to say the least.

CORZINE DEFENDS CUTS TO BEACH REPLENISHMENT FUND

Gov. Corzine having a Cup of Joe with the voters

Gov. Corzine to his credit has cut back funding for so called beach replenishment projects in NJ. Our local congressman Frank Lobiondo has been going around and criticizing the Gov., specifically on these cuts. Frank loves pouring our Tax dollars into the Ocean and has been rewarded nicely for his support by more then a few firms that have profited from these programs. Although, Congressman Lobiondo goes around blovating that sand equals jobs as his mantra, this whole notion as attractive a slogan as it might be doesn't however hold up to closer scrutiny. As I've been saying for yrs. eventually the easy $$ will start to dry up for these Projects and now that is happening. Given the choices whose surprised?

KRUGMAN WEIGHS IN!

Princeton Prof. of Economics and 2008 Nobel Prize ( In economics)  winner Paul Krugman

Seems Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman isn't buying Treasury Sect. Geitner's now leaked Bank rescue plan. Read @ the title link Krugman's NY Times article today all about this.

BEACH BANTER: SPRING EDITION

SPRING!!

It's time to get outside and survey your garden if you still have one.  Winter always leaves behind something to repair. I have a whole section of one of my fences that needs to be replaced. The veggie garden will get special attention this yr. of "the Great Recession" as it's coming to be known. Down   here @ the Beach the economy has slowed precipitously, to say the least. Since fall thousands of local people have lost their jobs and many are losing their homes as well. The Casino Industry is in a terrible slump and with it the rest of our economy. A sign of times is on the front page of our local paper, a picture of our new President's wife is seen with her children planting a "kitchen garden" on the White House lawn. The last time the WH had a veggie garden was during WW2 and it was called a "Victory garden" then.  It is a time for many of increasing hardship and worry for the future. Yet, it's still spring and the crocuses are blooming and the sun feels a bit warmer with each passing day now. It's a time of hope and as Morgan Freeman said in the classix Hollywood prison drama, The Shawshank Redemption , "Hope is a good thing."

STORM RUN OFF WATER POLLUTION:

New technology in Niantic

OK, this isn't exactly a sexy topic to report on but it's an important one. Read @ the title link all about how storm run off is handled in this So. Conn.  town of Niantic.

THE PROBLEM:

Lawrence Summers
Timothy Geitner

IMHO President Obama fumbled the ball badly by nominating these two individuals to their present posts. Both are way to entangled, either directly or indirectly with the present economic mess and many of it's key players. When I say entangled, I don't mean in a good way either. I believe both of them have Wall St's. interest more at heart then the average American's.  In nominating them President Obama probably made a decision to send a signal to Wall St. that it would be business as usual.  I think in doing this he had hoped things would calm down and he'd get some cooperation from this sector of the economy. Just the opposite has happened. Wall St. did indeed get the signal and yesterday we saw the result with the AIG bonus scandal blowing up in the President's face. The truth is Summers and Geitner are more interested in protecting their pals on Wall St. and in the Big banks then they are in making the needed CHANGES to the system. A system that has failed and failed so badly the entire world's economic situation is hanging in the balance. Simply put, Obama needs some players in these two pivotal spots that are not connected to the present gang on Wall St. Neither of these two  will deliver the CHANGES that are needed in this area and the sooner Obama realizes it the better.

HAPPY ST. PAT'S DAY - Pics of IRISH BEACHES

Ireland's Atlantic beaches look a lot like Northern Calif. The big difference is it's a lot colder and rains a bit more. Nevertheless, the surfing is great from what I hear and no crowds. Click on the title page for more Pics. of Irish beaches.

AIG - THE PIRATES OF WALL ST. STRIKE AGAIN!

AIG WANTS THOSE BONUSES!

The so called Chairmen of AIG the Gov't owned Insurance giant deemed to BIG to fail has told the Press that he has to pay his executives 100's of millions in bonuses to " retain talent." What talent? These bozos bankrupted the world's financial system and then came crying to the taxpayers of the USA for a $165 Billion dollar bail-out. Now too show all of us what utter chumps we are they are telling us that those bonuses were in their pre-bail-out contracts and we can't violate the sanctity of  those contracts. Oh really? Maybe , they should read the deal we made with the Auto makers for their bail-outs then. All kinds of so called sacred contracts ( mostly Union contracts) are to be violated for them to qualify for their $$.  It seems that some employees are more equal then others when it's bail-out time.   If this wasn't so absurd it would be a good comedy piece for Stewart or Colbert. These people don't seem to get it do they?

CHUTZPAH!

While millions are being fired and millions more have lost almost their entire retirement or life savings, this band of pirates has the balls to demand MORE! That any of them still have their jobs is in of itself astounding and testament to how completely out of control some of the managements of these Corps. have become. It's time to break em up Cowboy! Teddy Roosevelt was right and so was his Uncle Franklin. These men and others like them are at the very ROOT of the economic  calamity the world is presently experiencing. They are greedy evil bastards and many of them belong in cells next to Madoff for what they have perpetrated. But, not only do they not think they have done anything wrong, to the contrary they think they DESERVE to be rewarded for what they've done! Where oh where is Madame Defarge when we need her ? The Yiddish word for all of this is Chutzpah and boy are these folks full of it.

BEACH BANTER: THE BIG DECLINE IS HAPPENING!!

THE DROP has DROPPED!!

The BIG news this week locally was all about the enormous drop in Casino revenue in Feb. As of today, the Casinos are almost 30% off their collective 2007 numbers!  All four of the proposed "new" casino projects have either been cancelled or delayed and many of the existing Casinos are in real finiancial trouble, with a few either being foreclosed on or taking a Chpt. 11 bankruptcy.  With proposed Casinos being planned for the Delaware River area in Philly and the Catskills Casinos getting ready to open up soon, it all adds up to an increasingly more seasonal market for AC and environs.

Thousands lose their Casino jobs

Thousands of people have lost their full-time jobs in these establishments and thousands more have seen their hrs. reduced.  The bottom line for AC and the surrounding area is a "depression" level decline. The speed in which all this is happening has still not sunk in, locally. I suspect we will be seeing many people leaving this area to look for work elsewhere in the coming yrs. Contrary to the feel good nonsense of the local paid for cheerleaders , things suck for the average working person and small businessmen locally and I for one doubt we'll be seeing any real improvement any time soon.

SCIENCE FRIDAY: THE KEPLER MISSION

The Kepler launch last week

I've only seen one rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla. @ night. They're spectacular to observe, to say the least. Check out the article at the title link. The Kepler mission sounds like fun. Who knows, maybe Kepler will find another Earth close by and we can ditch this one after we finish trashing it ( literally - no pun intended).

PRIORITES KICK IN:

PUSH IS COMING TO SHOVE

I've repeatedly said over the years that eventually so called beach Replenishment, as a State function would start to come against the cold hard facts of economic Recession and increasingly tight State and Federal budgets. It appears , at least in NJ that day has arrived. In a headline article in the AC Press today, NJ State Treasurer David Rousseau is quoted, as saying, " Why should shore protection-not anything against shore protection - but why should shore protection be held at a higher standard than the developmentally disabled?" HELLO! It shouldn't , nor should it come before a host of other more important HUMAN needs.  Nevertheless, you can already hear the howler monkey's screaming for more sand! Sand is more important then people it seems. I mean how can a wealthy beach front owner enjoy his or her 2nd or 3rd beach estate without a nice wide sandy beach for their friends?  Hell, one local Dr. is even suing so he can have a private pool smack in the middle of the last surviving coastal dune forest in So. Jersey, in Avalon. I mean priorites are priorites and anything that gets in the way of the landed gentry is to be fought over.  Mind you if you think this is a partisan issue forget it! Both , parties are for sand dredging FOOL speed ahead. What the hell a million into the Ocean here a million there it's all for the protection of  ( wealthy landowners,  Corp. profits and political patronage), what could possibly be more important then these these priorites?

PUT SINGLE PAYER ON THE TABLE!

THE BIG WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE

All this week the White House  has been hosting an extraordinary meeting about the broken health care system in this country. Unbelieveably, @  first not a single representative for the Single-payer form of health-care was invited!  That has since changed, however it seems the bias is to allow the same groups ( The so called Health Ins. Industry) that are at the center of this crisis to be allowed to solve it! Sound familiar? This is the same strategy being used to fix the banking and financial Industry as well. How our new President expects any meaningful change form the very same people at the center of these extremely dysfunctional Industries is beyond me and many others? It looks more like the these people will do just the opposite , they will block any meaningful change that hurts them and their companies and friends. This is not Change we can Believe in. Today in the US we have a medical system that is heavily weighted toward the wealthy and public  sector employees and their interests and against the general public. Over 50 mil. Americans have no health-care at all for themselves and their families. ( this no. has been growing daily for over 15 yrs.) The present employer provided health-care idea is failing. More and more families and individuals are being thrown to the  wolves as more  companies attempt to end  coverage for their employees. ( the ones they have left that is). This is not a system that should be supported by employers, in most other Industrial countries health-care is a quasi-Gov't responsibility and many believe, it should be here as well.  IMHO  Health care should be a "human right" not  a profit driven Insurance scam as it is today.

MEDICARE

Part of our health-care system has been "Socialized" now for over 40 yrs., with great success, it's called Medicare and everyone over 65 gets it. We need to expand and modernize this system now to include the whole population , or at least those that want to join it. Will this happen? I'm sad to say, probably not. It appears right now that the Industry people will get their way and this crisis will just deepen. Anyway, read a really great article @ the title link about this meeting.

STATE BEACH FUND TO BE CUT!

Here's a picture of Ventnor illegally demolishing a State Dune in 2005. Nobody yet has been punished for this misdeed.  However, this week the State itself started to demolish it's own Beach Replenishment fund due to the budget crisis.  $6.5 million were cut from the $25 mil. budget. This fund was created from a special tax on all Hotel and Motel owners in NJ. I doubt their tax will be cut as well. The $$ will just be re-directed to cover the growing State deficit.
Maybe, the Gov. should consider laying off some of the 85K State workers? In 1905 the State had approx. 267 full-time employees.  Read more about this  cut and others at the title link.

STIMULUS?

OBAMA STIMULUS $$ IN ACTION?

You'll excuse me for being cynical here, however if what's pictured above is what were being sold as economic stimulus, we've got problems folks. It appears my worst fears are starting to come true. Obama's team is being sold these pork barrel projects as economic stimulus projects. They're just more tax dollars into the sea ( literally). The only people these projects stimulate are the same old crowd of well heeled and well connected marine engineering outfits and Big Corp. and Army Corp connected dredgers, like Great Lakes and Weekes Marine. Say , bye bye to billions folks, cause your not going to see one new job created by these wasteful stupid projects. Read all about it @ the title link.

THE PIRATES OF WALL ST.

Like Somali Pirates, Wall Street Holds U.S. to Ransom

   by Ann Pettifor

Somali Pirates were condemned when they hijacked tankers, took sailors hostage and demanded million-dollar ransoms. But their demands were a drop in the bucket compared to the ransoms demanded by Wall Street.
And the Somalis were kinder to their hostages than Wall Street is to millions of unemployed Americans. For while the Somalian pirates returned hostages unharmed, bankers, fraudsters and failed insurers continue to harm the US administration and hold millions of Americans hostage. The latter are being stripped effectively, of pensions, savings, livelihoods and jobs.
The Pentagon ordered the US Navy to apprehend Somalian pirates. However there has been no such 'Counter Piracy Execute Order' from the White House or US Treasury and aimed at Wall St. buccaneers. On the contrary. The US Treasury, like the British government, is capitulating to the pirates of the finance sector with a haste and a timidity that is unseemly, and if I may say so, unmanly.
Britain's government announced yesterday that while it was obliged to take a 65% stake in a 'broke' bank - Lloyds - it was refraining from exercising its full rights. The government would not, for example, use its stake in the bank to give taxpayers full control. Nor would they call for the resignation of CEOs and board members responsible for breaking the bank. Lord Mandelson the Business Minister said this was neither "necessary or desirable".
The US Treasury has set the pattern. While filling the vaults of Wall Street banks with taxpayer-backed funds, Secretary Geithner has refrained from asking for letters of resignation from the board members and CEOs that broke the banks. These banks have used their control over the nation's deposits and savings and over interest rates to hold the whole economy to ransom.
The US administration, like the British government, is pumping taxpayer-backed 'liquidity' into these banks without giving taxpayers full control over the banks.
The liquidity has gone through the front door. An indecent proportion has been funnelled straight out the back door to pay bonuses to failed executives. The rest of the loot has been grabbed and hoarded by the banks and is not being lent out to companies and households at affordable rates.
In other words, the pirates have been paid a handsome ransom and left in charge of the hijacked ship that is the nation's finances.
All this daylight robbery and confusion takes place because policy-makers - at the US Treasury, the Federal Reserve and the British government - do not understand what is going on.
Let us spell it out for them. Banks are going bust because their customers cannot repay debts, or afford to borrow. Customers cannot repay debts because a) these debts exceed their income and/or assets and b) because the interest rates or borrowing costs on these debts are too high, and unpayable. If you don't believe me, ask Warren Buffett. He tells shareholders that "highly-rated companies, such as Berkshire, are experiencing borrowing costs that, in relation to Treasury rates, are at record levels.
Though Berkshire's credit is pristine - one of only seven AAA corporations in the country - (its) cost of borrowing is now far higher than competitors with shaky balance sheets but government backing."
Millions of individuals and many thousands of companies are now unable to borrow. Burdened with huge debts by de-regulated lenders and financiers, many are being bankrupted by record high borrowing costs on their debts.
This is the real crisis in the economy. And the Federal Reserve declines to address this crisis of high real rates of interest.
Because they are facing insolvency, companies are firing workers. This is pushing up unemployment to levels comparable to those at the height of the Great Depression. Unemployed workers can't pay debts. It's simple.
Our graph below gives the real unemployment figures. Last week the Labor Bureau suggested that only 5 million people have lost their jobs in the last twelve months, and that only 12.5 million people are unemployed. We think that is optimistic.
The Bureau does not include in the official release, 'discouraged' employees or those working part-time because they simply can't get full time jobs. Dig deeper, and the percentage unemployed today is almost double that announced on Friday: 15%. We predict if policies are inadequate and interest rates stay high, that it will be as high as 20% by the end of this year. That will bring unemployment - under President Obama's watch - close to the level it hit, 25%, at the height of the Great Depression in 1933.

These millions of unemployed are American hostages tied up in a global economic failure not of their making.
They are desperate for the Federal Reserve to act as decisively as the Pentagon, and take on the banking pirates.
This cannot be done by pumping more taxpayer-backed money into the banks. Why? Because the crisis has moved on. It's no longer a crisis of liquidity, but of solvency. Banks cannot be made solvent by taxpayers. They can only be made solvent if and when companies and individuals can afford to borrow, and to repay debts.
By throwing money at the banks, and by refusing to take full charge of how they are run; by refusing to lower borrowing costs, US Treasury officials and the Fed Reserve are dodging the big issue: corporate and household insolvency.
Cutting borrowing costs would start to address the solvency issue. Putting a floor under insolvent companies and insolvent homeowners - would save the banks. At the same time it would release the hostages that are the unemployed, the elderly, the savers and the entrepreneurs.
The Federal Reserve can begin to lower borrowing costs by measures known as Quantitative Easing (QE). These were adopted by the Bank of Japan in March, 2001, and by the Bank of England last week. QE does not mean 'printing money' - this is a widespread misunderstanding. (For more on QE, click here.) QE will help to lower interest rates and therefore borrowing costs. Governor Ben Bernanke is still ignoring the experience of Japan and the way in which QE was used to lower rates and loosen the grip of insolvency on the economy.
He must adopt QE measures urgently. The Obama presidency has only just been launched on a wave of excitement and anticipation. If it is not to end with a hostage crisis of mass unemployment, rising crime, hungry children and riots outside banks, then the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury must take control.

WOULD YOU TRUST THIS MAN WITH YOUR LIFE SAVINGS?

Here's an article about one of AC's past leading lites. It seems Mr. Trump and his family are now scamming people Int'lly, not just in the U.S. anymore. NORTH WILDWOOD TO GET SAND?

If you try real hard you can make out the Ocean in this photo. Yes, Wildwood is going to get sand folks! Wildwood, NJ, with it's 1000 ft wide beaches , well not exactly. North Wildwood's beaches u see are pretty badly eroded. Where do u think all this sand will then go? The 10 mil. Project will promptly go directly to Wildwood's 1K wide beaches, that are already widening at the rate of 17 ft. a yr.! Now they'll widen at the rate of 25 ft. yr.! The NJDEP has now as they say on TV, "jumped the shark." What's next guys, snow to Alaska?

HUNDREDS MORE WEAPONS FOUND ON SURF CITY BEACH!

Last yr. the Army and NJDEP allowed millions of people to walk the beaches of Surf City declaring them free of weapons and safe. People still found them anyway. The Gov't decided the whole beach needed to be screened and $20 mil. was allocated for the job. Now it seems the Army bomb disposal squads have found many hundreds more of these old munitions. HEALTH CARE INS. EXECUTIVES @ WORK

We need a SINGLE PAYER HEALTH INSURANCE SYSTEM like the rest of the civilized world. If President Obama is really serious about change, this is a change that is LONG over do. People are dying in this country under the present oxymoronic system called Health Ins. Health Ins. CEO's are among many of the billionaires created these last 30 yrs. All the while over 50 mil. Americans have no health Ins. and another 100 mil. are under Insured. This is now a critical economic issue as well. Health costs are eating up an increasing amount of our shrinking GDP. Companies can no longer afford to offer this benefit to their employees. It's got to stop or our country will sink to the level of countries like Botswana. It's an irony that today 65 yrs. after WW2 both Germany and Japan have much better health care systems then we do and we've been paying through our teeth to provide these countries a nuclear umbrella.

PIPELINE MASTERS 2008

The Surfing World's most important and prized contest since 1971. Only been surfing here once. Ugly place to wipe-out to say the least. The locals are almost as bad as the reef. Good story about this beach /wave and contest at the title link.
